Recently, the Cachalo, Indonesia’s first traditional PHINISI wooden yacht equipped with a customized Weichai marine engine solution, successfully completed its sea trial. This marks a breakthrough for Weichai’s high-end marine engine products in Indonesia’s traditional wooden leisure-yacht segment.

As one of Indonesia’s most iconic traditional wooden vessels, the PHINISI is renowned worldwide for exquisite handcrafted shipbuilding, distinctive hull design, and rich cultural heritage. It is suitable for high-end private cruising and also supports charter services such as cultural tourism and sightseeing. The PHINISI tested in this sea trial measures 48 m in length, 9 m in beam, and has a design draft of 3 m, offering more onboard space and a more comfortable leisure experience.

All five onboard power units are Weichai products. The main propulsion system is powered by marine engines including the Baudouin 6M33, while the generator sets are Weichai silent-type generator sets. In response to the PHINISI’s traditional characteristics and modern navigation requirements, Weichai Indonesia, together with local partners, formed a dedicated project team to carry out customized development and adaptation of the power system, delivering an exclusive leisure-yacht solution that is more comfortable, more reliable, and more energy-efficient.

Indonesia has long been a key market for Weichai marine products. Weichai has been deeply rooted in the country for more than 40 years, with a sales network covering major islands across Indonesia. Competing head-to-head with leading international brands, Weichai holds nearly 60% market share in Indonesia’s marine gen-set market, maintaining an industry-leading position for many consecutive years.

During hours of high-intensity sea-trial testing—including speed trials, maneuverability tests, and emergency start/stop—Weichai marine engine operated smoothly, with all parameters maintained within optimal ranges, earning strong customer recognition. Weichai also provides full life-cycle support, including propeller matching, installation guidance, and operator training, helping customers operate with greater confidence and convenience.
